Creative Listening

Hello Internet Friends!

Today I want to continue with the Finding Inspiration theme - this time with the focus on finding inspiration in what we listen to.

I recently blended families with my partner (eek) and instead of a sweet-as 12 minute commute to work, I now average 1 and a half hours each way, each day. And while I love my tunes, even my favourites can get a bit old after listening to them for hours on end, day in day out.  So it isn't any great surprise that I am a huge fan of Podcasts.

Now, I don't know WHAT it is, but the minute you mention podcasts everyone you meet seems to  relish listening to true crime podcasts about serial killers and other ghoulish things! I don't get it.  Instead my go to are podcasts all about creativity and and/or interviews with artists and creators of all types.

So I thought that I would collate for you a few of my favourites. Here they are in no particular order:

Creative Pep Talk

If you need pepping up and cheering on - Andy J Pizza is the man to listen to. His podcast consists of stories and strategies for building a thriving creative practice and has been going for over 10 years, so there are a lot of episodes to keep you going. Andy suggests starting at the most recent episode and then going to episode 300 and working your way up to the present again.

Show Up or Shut Up - with Wendy Solganik

Wendy Solganik - AKA Willa Wanders is a prolific maker and the creator of Fodder School - an all year online 'school' with 12 teachers.  She is a talented mixed media artist and bookmaker and I *might* have a bit of a girl crush on her and have bought a tonne of her classes. Because she is so busy creating and teaching now she often only posts new episodes when she is releasing new class content and interviews each of the teachers. Having said that, they are still worth a listen as you get to know each creator and there are always tidbits that I come away with that inspire me.

The Creative Genius Podcast with Kate Shepherd

I could listen to Kate Shepherd all day every day.  She has such a soothing voice and demeanour and is just a delight. Fair warning - she is a little woo woo but that is just part of her charm.  She creates such a wonderful connection with each creative soul that she chats to, that you just know that they all end up adoring her too.

The Laura Horn Art Podcast

Once you start listening to this podcast you instantly fall in love with Laura and her husband Ritchie.  Between Laura's soothing voice and cheeky laugh and Ritchie's lilting Irish accent you'll be instantly hooked as they discuss everything from the highs and lows of working together in their art business, to tips and strategies for creating online content or studio updates.

Fail Like an Artist

Hosted by Phoebe Gander and Julie Battisti the Fail Like an Artist Podcast is like listening to friends.  Phoebe and Julie are very different personality wise and have different styles but their friendship (created via the internet) is a perfect blend of each.  You will literally laugh out loud at times (and sometimes cry) when you listen to each episode.

The Craftermath - an Art and Craft Podcast

This podcast is hosted by Tania Ahmed and is sadly only 8 episodes so I got through them pretty quickly (hello 3hrs per day commute) but they are a great listen - especially if you are a fan of Gelli Arts and all things Gelli plate printing, mixed media and collage.

Balzer Designs Adventures in Arting Podcast

Adventures in Arting is hosted by veteran mixed media artist Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and her Mother Eileen Hsu-Balzer. They discuss all things art and creativity. The Mother Daughter duo bring different points of view to each discussion, which help to create episodes that are suitable for all ages and levels of experience.

Well, that's probably enough for now.  I do listen to a few more but I didn't want to go on forever ;)

What do you guys listen to on long commutes? Music? Podcasts? Audiobooks? I tried audiobooks but started falling asleep...or maybe that was just a bad choice of book ;)  I am always needing more to listen to so if you have any suggestions, please let me know.  And also let me know if you are interested (or not) in hearing about the rest of my fave podcasts.

Thanks for stopping by!

Finding Inspiration

Yesterday I went for a jaunt around Yeerongpilly and Salisbury. I don't get out much so I was pleasantly amazed by the absolute creative havens they both were. At Yeerongpilly we started with breakfast at the Adonis Cafe which itself was gorgeous. The food was delicious and the whole area is dotted with stunning mosaics from a previous resident artist.  We were then presented with a plethora of creative industry businesses - Vector Etch, KEPK art and studio space, Studio West End just to name a few.  As we went from door to door I felt that I could spend days just talking to the artists and creators that we discovered and ogling their works.  There is also a gorgeous plant shop (which I stoically avoided going into with my black thumbs), an aquarium, a pottery boutique, the list goes on - the whole area down Lucy Street is like a creative hub.  At Salisbury we went and visited the fabulous Katie from Art Class Brisbane.  After feasting our eyes on her new ...

Hello There

Well hello, hello to everybody out there in internet land!! I know what you are thinking...should we tell Barbara that 2014 called and they want their blog back?? I know. it's 2024 and I'm starting a new blog.   But, I don't know, I'm a retro-loving gal and I figured that surely blogging can experience it's own renaissance?! And I don't mean the Medieval Fayre variety. Less swords and more connection.  Don't get me wrong, I love Instagram and all the pretty pictures, but I just felt the need to have a little interwebs home of my own to ramble more, share more and really have the chance to slow down and connect.   So pull up a comfy chair, or couch or blanket fort.  And tell me a little about yourself.  It could be where you are right now, what you love to do or make, or even what your dreams for the year involve.  Either way, I'd love to know.    I have a feeling we are going to be great friends.
